Waterfall Braids

This season sees many occasions from holidays to weddings to proms and graduation balls. Whatever you're attending, try this top summer hair style for something a little different and unexpected.

For a fresh take on the braids trends seen last year, opt for the waterfall braid – a chic look allowing hair to remain down and small sections to be pulled through the braid creating a waterfall style. This has been covered in tutorials by bloggers and on YouTube, some of which give handy (and thankfully detailed!) step-by-step instructions. Perfect for weddings and holidays, the waterfall braid can be tailored to you. For a beachy look, make sure hair is wavy or tousled. Salt sprays help to define and maintain curls and waves, and are ideal for dishevelled, messy styles. There are several products available, a personal favourite being the Umberto Giannini Glam Hair Grunge Glamour Tousled Salt Spray (£5.61, Boots). Firstly create the braid (French braid style), keeping it relatively loose and continuing round the head or stopping halfway round depending on the look you are going for. Pin in place, and simply spritz some salt spray into damp (or dry) hair and scrunch from the ends up to define waves and create tousled locks (make sure this is done after the braid has been created, otherwise you may end up with a tangled, crazy mane!) Run fingers through to tame and separate the waves and finish with some hairspray to hold the braid in place. Alternatively, straighten hair and keep the braid tighter for a neat, glossy look. This can be done on yourself, although agreeably it does take a few attempts to perfect it!

For those that cannot braid or struggle with the fiddly style, opt for the waterfall twist – an easy take on the waterfall braid it is much simpler and quicker to do – ideal if you need to be ready in a hurry! Again this style has been covered on video tutorials and is versatile – it can be tousled and wavy for beach babe chic or slick and glam for a polished look.

Simply take two chunks of hair from the side of the head. Twist one over the other and grab a section of hair from the roots next to the twist you are creating. Place this section of hair in the middle of the two chunks you already have, and twist your original strands over the top. This should push the latest section of hair through the middle and give the waterfall effect. Repeat this until the whole head or the desired look is complete, pin in place and use a little hairspray. Whilst the style isn't as detailed and intricate as the braid, it gives the same effect and has a relaxed, chic vibe – a perfect look for the summer.
